3 Best Tips for Seniors to Face Winter

Winter is coming! We get it. It is probably the most clichest way to start this blog but we had to use it. Not for the sake of cliche but for the sake of context. Just as the characters from the popular television show ‘Game of Thrones’ got themselves ready for the winter war, this is the time everyone gets ready for the season by unfolding their sweaters, warming up their beds and summoning all the skin and body care products.

All the hype aside, winter is not that bad for youngsters and they can easily jump over this natural hurdle. But it is the senior citizens who pay the toll big time by succumbing to various health issues.

This is the season that provides a perfect condition for the likes of flu, dry skin, joint pains, cold sores, and the list goes on until the season end unless if you provide the right care for the elderly.

Here are the 3 ways you could help your elders in tackling the winter provoked health conditions. Continue reading the blog to understand what exactly you should do to help them.

1. Eat Right -

Colder days can be really difficult for the older people. Due to the changed weather conditions, the biological clock in the system may confuse you by posing various requirements at various times. Your senior needs complete protection on this front.
  • Roots are the way - Winter is not season for your favorite veggies and fruits. But what should you eat to get the daily share of vital nutrients? Look down and your answer lies there below the ground. Try the root vegetables as they contain as much nutrients as you see in the vegetables.
  • Vitamin D is the Target - As the sun is proven to be winter-shy, you need to focus more on the food items that provide vitamin D. You could find ample amounts of it in egg yolks, seafood, and in vitamin D fortified milk. If you are a vegetarian, you could try healthy grains instead.
  • Go Green and Dark - Go for dark and leafy vegetables as they are rich sources for antioxidants and vitamins. Daily munch on spinach, broccoli and kale is worth of every bite.
  • A BIG No to the Canned and Frozen Foods - No matter how safe they claim their frozen foods are you simply do not serve them to your seniors. The excessive amount of sodium and the extra preservatives would be the least things in your seniors’ consumption chart.
  • Stay Away from Oil and Fried Foods - Given the impact that is created by winter on your stomach, your oil and fried food intake makes it extremely difficult for your digestive system to digest the food. Try to avoid all sorts of fried food that includes snacks, starters and other sorts whatever they are being called in your locality.

2. Stay Fit -

Wouldn’t be a dream to sleep that extra one hour under your cozy blanket while it is freezing cold outside? Yes, you can dream about it but in reality you should exact opposite. When the sun comes out, you come out and sweat a bit more during the winters. This, not only, helps you stay fit but also provides the much needed vitamin D to your body.

3. Special Care for Seniors with Certain Health Issues -

Winter can be long and a hardship for seniors who have health issues such as asthma and arthritis. Such seniors need special care. Provide them with the needed medical support and ensure the house is warm and they are staying away from anything that is cold, including water.

It does not take a genius to understand that the elderly needs are different and they require prominent care that addresses their physical, emotional and psychological issues. This is what exactly makes it a must for you to act now!
